Every individual, at one stage or the other, has had to appear for some competitive examinations. These competitive examinations rather act as an elimination procedure to select the best candidates for a particular position (in case of examination to fill in some specific vacancies) or a particular seat (in case of some academic program). The candidates, thus, are tested on various parameters such as their logical reasoning, their critical analysis, their thought process, and most obviously on their writing abilities. The writing abilities and the structuring of their thought process are tested mainly with the use of Essays. Candidates, therefore, might require some essay writing tips for competitive examinations.

Exam Essay Topics

Competitive examinations are directed towards achieving some particular objective, mostly in terms of selecting a candidate for a particular position or selecting students for a particular study program. Therefore essay topics for selecting the right candidate need to fulfill the basic criteria of such examination. An example of this would be in case the position requires testing the candidate on good judgmental capabilities or analytical capabilities, the relevant exam essay topic would certainly be an open ended question which needs to be justified, clarified, and analyzed according to their understanding and depth of knowledge. Mostly, the candidates are given relevant current affairs based topic which has relevance in the current context and the candidate would most likely be aware of such a topic.

English Essays for Competitive Exams

Competitive examinations are held in order to test different attitudes and aptitudes of the candidate. Thus on one hand they are being tested for analytical abilities and on the other they are being tested on their understanding of the current affairs. However, among all the questions, essay based questions serve two purposes. On one hand such question tests the awareness and understanding of a particular issue (mostly related to current affairs or related to their subject area) and on the other hand the fluency in English as a subject of communication too is being tested through these essays. The candidate appearing for such English essays in competitive examination thus need to focus on their writing styles, grammar, and flow of content while presenting their depth of knowledge.

Certification Questions

A competitive examination tests the candidate on almost all parameters. While the essay questions test their English language capabilities, the certification questions test their subject knowledge and certify their aptitude and understanding of the subject.

15 essay writing tips for competitive exams

Focusing more on the essay questions given in competitive examinations, the candidates surely need some handy essay writing tips for appearing and becoming successful in competitive exams. Essays require a good amount of information which needs to be logically and factually presented in the structured format within the stipulated time period, that too without the help of any secondary sources, especially the internet. Therefore, the following list of tips would surely be handy for the candidates:

Before the Examination:

  • The candidate should identify the recent affairs happening within the global space, at least the most important one.
  • The candidate should gather as much information about these events and affairs as possible which should include key definitions, brief description of the issue, brief sequence of events, comparing and contrasting any views available on such events, among others.
  • The candidate should memorize such information to the best of their abilities.
  • The candidate should practice writing essays on such events and topics incorporating as much information as possible.
  • The candidate can even take short notes of such key information and revise the same whenever possible so that important points are not left out.

During the Examination:

  • The candidate should read the question carefully.
  • The candidate needs to understand the question and the context in which such a question has been designed.
  • In case the candidate gets the topic or similar topic which he or she has been practicing, then create a “memory dump” and write down all the memorized information in short notes style.
  • Then elaborate on the points mentioned in such memory dump one at a time while concentrating on the flow of text and idea in such a case.
  • While writing such an informed essay start by formulating a thesis which would answer the entire question asked. The candidate can take help of the wording from the question to formulate the thesis. This should be done in the very first paragraph of the essay.
  • Along with the thesis statement, a brief introduction to the topic of the question and at least a brief hint of the argument which would be supported in the essay should also be provided in the first paragraph of the essay.
  • The candidate should try to provide as many supporting arguments and evidences as possible. This would make the essay strong and convincing.
  • The candidate should try to make a persuasive argument (mostly the question of the essay does not have close ended answers of right or wrong) in order to sound convincing to the evaluator.
  • In case the candidate gets a topic which he/she has not practiced, it is best not to panic. At best, the candidate needs to think with an open mind and try to logically remember any hint of such a subject or at least derive some logic from the question in order to write something on the topic in a logical manner such that at least the evaluator is impressed by the writing style.
  • Leaving out the essay is not a good option since it not only carries a good weightage of number but also is important in evaluating your writing skills. While logic does not support, it is best to at least have a convincing write up which can portray one’s writing and communicating powers.

While good preparation is the key to success for any competitive examination, such essay writing tips for competitive exams would certainly come in handy at the precious moments of preparation and attending the competitive examination.

The world is running fast. In order to maintain pace with such a fast moving world, each individual existing in this competitive world too need to run. While the individuals run to make their identity in this competitive world, such individuals have competition from other individual. In order to prove themselves better, they need to undergo competitive examinations either for seeking a job or to seek admission into a course of study. Most of the times, these competitive examinations strives to understand the critical thinking abilities and the subject knowledge of the candidates.

In order to make these competitive examinations crisper, time saver, and a little confusing as well as easier to assess, the agencies opt for Multiple Choice Questions. While there are many forums which discuss on the methods which should be adopted to attempt such a Multiple Choice Question based paper, it is important to factor in the component of negative marking associated with such multiple choice questions. The students would, thus, require tips to answer multiple choice questions with negative marking.

Barring a few competitive examinations, the students need to deal with the component of negative marking in majority of such examinations. Such negative marking schemes are usually one of the techniques for eliminating candidates. The word Negative marking indicates that the marks that the student obtains in the examination would be deducted for each wrong answer provided by the candidate.

Most of the times, wrong answers attract a negative marking of ¼ of a number and this can extend up to making the student lose 1 mark for each wrong answer or even more. Taking the example of ¼ of a number deduction for each wrong answer, the student would lose a complete mark for four wrong answers. Such a mark might be crucial enough to make the difference between passing and failing the examination. Students should thus attempt to answer multiple choice questions correctly and follow the tips mentioned below to answer the multiple choice questions without attracting negative marks or at least reduce the same to a large extent.

Tips to Answer Multiple Choice Questions with Negative Marking

In order to avoid negative marking in the multiple choice questions segment of the examination, the candidate can follow the tips mentioned below:
1. Make an attempt to answer the maximum number of questions, though such attempt should at least have some logical basis of guessing. Answering maximum number of questions increase the probability of getting right answers which would increase the positive marks while reducing the effect of negative marking

2. A golden rule when the candidate is not sure of the answer and is making a calculated risk on choosing the first option, he or she should be ensure that the last option is not “all of the above”. Multiple choice questions with such an option should be dealt with extra caution.

3. The golden rule followed for an option of “all of the above” should also be followed for the questions with an option of “none of the above.” Apply extra caution in selecting the options in such questions. These can be tricky choices.

4. In questions where the candidate is sure about the answer, it is advisable to read each option carefully. The golden rule which can be followed here is to eliminate each option in order to be doubly sure about the option which the candidate selects, thus eliminating any possibility of getting the answer wrong. The candidate should also be sure about choosing the best possible answer rather than selecting the right answer which emphasizes on being wise enough in choosing the option.

5. In case the candidate gets confused about any question or even between more than one options the golden rule is to skip the question and move forward. The question can be revisited in sometime. This might help in removing the confusion and selecting the best possible answer.

6. In case the candidate believes that he/she has some or at least a little idea about the topic and subject of the question, then it is advisable to at least attempt the question in a logical manner based on his or her understanding. The candidate should ideally try to imagine and answer the question logically without looking at the options in the very first case. This would help him/her to be a little more assured about the answer.

7. In case the candidate faces a dilemma between a knowledge based answer and a gut based answer, it is advisable to always go with the knowledge based answer rather than going with the gut based answer since gut may or may not go wrong but knowledge will never go wrong.

8. While answering the negatively worded questions, it is always advisable to try the True and False method since that would give a definitive picture of the question and allow the candidate to answer the same correctly.

9. While attempting to answer multiple choice questions, the candidates should analyze the questions well and convince him/her about the answers much before marking the actual answer on the sheet. This would prevent him/her from making double writing or make multiple choices.

10. The final golden tip about attempting multiple choice question is the wisest one. Researches prove that the very first guess about the answer of a particular question is found to be correct in most of the cases. Therefore go with the first guess and first gut feeling.

While it is always advisable to attempt a multiple choice question based competitive examination with full preparation, there are situations when the candidate needs to make guesses. These tips to answer multiple choice questions with negative markings come in handy at those times.

Various countries across the world are run according to their specified system of polity. While some countries adhere to a full presidential system, there are some others who comply with the federal system of governance. The federal system of governance is ideally the system where power is divided between a strong national level government and smaller local level governments. Some of the countries which practice the federal system of governance include India, USA, Germany, Canada, and Brazil. Education has always been a priority for any government including the government practicing Federal system of governance. Students, at times, require taking a loan to support such studies. Though there are various private parties including banks which offer loans to pursue such studies, the demand for federal student loans has always been important. Therefore, it is important that the students understand the process and requirements for federal student loans clearly prior to taking a decision.

What is Federal Student Loan?

In a move to support education, especially higher education, federal government offers various grants and aids either in kind or in monetary terms. The monetary aids are known as financial aids and federal student loans is a kind of financial aid offered by the specific school of study. When a student wishes to pursue a higher course of study, the student can opt for various options of financing (mostly dependant on wherever the fund is sourced from) as mentioned below:

  • Federal Aid which include grants (free money which do not have to be repaid), work-study funds (gives the students an opportunity to earn money to help pay his/her educational expenses), and federal student loans.
  • State Aid which include grants, scholarships, work-study funds, state loans, and tuition assistance.
  • Institutional (institution which is offering the course of study) Aid which includes scholarships, grants, and work-study programs.
  • Private Aid coming from any private party such as banks, corporations, and financial organization in the form of loans and scholarships.

While financial aids and federal student loans have different terms of conditions and requirements for various countries which further changes from time to time, but the overall system of loan and aid remains almost similar. Such as Federal Student Loan, a scheme practiced widely in the United States of America, are student loans offered by the federal government of the country. Such loans offered by the federal government, also known as federal student loans, usually enjoy lower interest rates and flexible repayment options to the borrowers as compared to the borrowers of other banks and private institutions. That is the reason why Federal Student Loans are in high demand.

Requirements for Federal Student Loans

Some of the basic requirements which are required before applying for a federal student loan are almost the same for every country though the qualifications for federal student loans can have some customizations depending on the course of study and country of study. The basic points confirming the student loan eligibility in USA include:

  • Be a citizen or eligible non citizen of the United States.
  • Have a valid Social Security Number (Students from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau are exempt from this requirement.)
  • Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate, or have completed home schooling.
  • Be enrolled in an eligible program (eligible for the loan) as a regular student seeking a degree or certificate.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress in the course of study.
  • Not owe a refund on a federal student grant or be in default on a federal student loan.
  • Register (or already be registered) with the Selective Service System, if the student is a male and not currently on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. (Students from the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau are exempt from registering; see https://sss.gov for more information.)
  • Not have a conviction for the possession or sale of illegal drugs for an offense that occurred while the student was receiving federal student aid (such as grants, work-study, or loans). In case of such a conviction, the student must complete the Student Aid Eligibility Worksheet to determine if the student is eligible for aid or partially eligible for aid.

[Learn and Practice – Certification Questions and Answers]

Apart from the Federal Student Loans, there are some financial aids such as Federal Pell Grant or subsidized loans where the government pays the interest while the student is in college. Such grants require the students to have a financial need. Moreover once the student has a bachelor’s degree or a first professional degree, he or she is generally not eligible for Pell or Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG). Further information about federal aid and loans can be obtained from the institution.

Process for Federal Student Loans

Students need to follow a due process while applying for a Federal Student Loan. In case of applying for US Government Federal Student Loan, the process to be followed include:

  • The students need to complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form.
  • Based on the results of the FAFSA form, the college or career school, where the student is applying, would send the student a financial aid offer, which may include federal student loans.
  • The school will inform the students how to accept all or a part of the loan.
  • Prior to receiving the loan funds, the students required to:
  • Complete entrance counseling, a tool to ensure that the student understands their obligation to repay the loan; and
  • Sign a Master Promissory Note, agreeing to the terms of the loan.
  • The students need to contact the financial aid office of the school he/she is planning to attend for further details regarding the process and requirements for federal student loans at the institute or school.

What is Probability?

Probability Theory is a branch of mathematics in which we learn how much the chance that an event will occur in an experiment i.e, it tells you how likely something is to occur. This doesn’t mean that an event is guaranteed to happen, sometimes it may not be happened or occurred. Just if it is more or less likely to occur.

  • The probability of an event is represented by a number which may be in the form of a whole number or fraction or decimal.
  • It lies between 0 to 1.
  • The probability of an event that is not possible, is zero.
  • The probability of a sure event is one.

It is a big subject in which students confuse a lot. Even though it needs simple addition and multiplication in calculations, the sequence of equations is long and confusing.

Learn and Practice Problems on Probability

Step by Step Process To Solve Probability Problems

Step 1: The very first step is to identify the experiment and event in that experiment.
Step 2: Count the number of possible events i.e a sample space in that experiment.
Step 3: Choose which event for which we have to find the probability.
Step 4: Count the number of chances that an event can occur out of the possible events.
Step 5: Write the number of chances that event could occur over the number of possible events in a ratio.

Let’s illustrate this concept with familiar models

1)  The Coin Toss

When you flip a coin, there are two events can occur:

The coin could land on heads or the coin could land on tails.

Since there is no way to land on both sides at the same time, only 1 of these events can occur

Q: What Is The Probability of Tails?

Step 1: Experiment is tossing a coin and events are tails or heads
Step 2: Total number of outcomes = 2
Step 3 & 4 : Favourable outcomes = 1
Step 5: Probability of tails to occur = 1/2

2)  The Pack of Cards

When you draw a card from a pack, there are 52 events can occur. But when you want to draw a specific card i.e, event only 1 favourable event to occur.

Q: What is the Probability of Getting Heart Queen from a Complete Pack of Cards?

Step 1: Experiment is picking a card from a pack of cards and events are cards

Step 2: Total number of cards in a pack = 52

Step 3: Number of queen cards = 4

Step 4: Number of heart queen = 1

Let ‘M’ be the event of getting queen heart.

Step 5 :

P(event) = Number of favourable outcomes/Total number of possible outcomes.

=> P(M) = 1/52

Hence, the probability of getting heart queen from the complete deck is 1/52.

Some Basic Formulas

Let there are two events in an experiment then the likelihood of the events can be measured as

If  P(A) > P(B) then event A is more likely to occur than event B.

If P(A) = P(B) then events A and B are equally likely to occur.

The Probability of Independent Individual Event Happening Is

P(A and B) = P(A) x P(B)

P(A∪B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A∩B)

Conditional Probability – P(A | B) = P(A∩B) / P(B)

Like many people say, the first impression is the last impression. When a person meets you for the first time, he/she will gauge your personality. The recruiters are professionals at this. So it matters how you present yourself to make a good first impression. A few points are listed below for you to follow. This helps your chances in boosting your first impression.

Before anything verbal happens, when you enter that room where you have your interview, all do is greet them, they see how well you’re dressed, how clean you are etc. Your appearance matters. Dress up neat, look clean and bold, this is a first impression. People love a well dressed man/woman.

Stick to time: Being late shows that you are lethargic. If you do not know where the venue is, leave in plenty of time. Even if you reach the venue before time, it doesn’t matter. You proved you aren’t lethargic.

Another key factor that impacts the interview is your body language. The posture you sit, the handshake, the gestures you make, etc are all points of gauging the interviewee. When you greet the interviewer, shake hands in a firm but in a non-painful way. Sit straight with your shoulders back. Avoid casual posture no matter what. Always maintain eye contact, do not fidget around this shows confidence.

Following are five questions frequently asked at the beginning of an interview. Be prepared to answer to have a great first impression.

  1. Tell us about yourself.
  2. Tell us about your education history.
  3. Walk us through your resume?
  4. Why do you want to work here?
  5. What do you know about our firm?

1. Choose a layout that suits both you as a person as well as the job you’re applying for. Make sure everything is in its place, which is your details, objectives, skills etc.

2. The focus point of your resume has to be your strengths. Set your objective straight. The key to a good resume is your objective and the positive you have in yourself.

3. Use the same text font. Yes, different fonts and styling makes it attractive, but to the person who views your resume, the matter in it makes the difference. Also use justified format instead of left align, since people are used to reading in that format.

4. Write a cover letter justifying for each position you are planning to apply for. A resume without a cover letter is a magazine without a cover page. It is basic business etiquette.

5. Make sure your resume is grammatically correct. Proof read it a couple of times before printing it.

6. Avoid using the smallest word in English. “I”. For example, “written articles for various websites and magazines as a free lancer”

7. While editing the resume, make sure all the hyperlinks are deactivated. Links like your e-mail ID, linkedin ID etc.

8. Consistency matters. Make sure your dates and other numerical related details are in the same format. More important is the way your dates are in the same format (dd/mm/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy)

9. Use proper punctuation and capitalization rules. This also shows your knowledge in Basic english.

10. The key is keeping it simple and short. A resume is not an autobiography

  • Body language and appearance : The most silent but deadly weapon you can carry to the interview is your body language. It could act as your benefit or your detriment. Sitting in the right position, not showing signs of nervousness, eye contact are key factors. Appearance is also a very important role. Clean and tidy proves to be more advisable. Formals, neatly pressed, clean shoes add more bonus points in your interview.
  • Politeness : Being polite and courteous make the interviewer happy and easy to communicate to. Politeness is not restricted to just the interview. Be the same with everyone, from the front desk to the final round (if you get through). These are the small things that interviewers see and gauge your results.
  • Be yourself and question them : It is very important to be yourself. Trying to fake an accent or be someone you aren’t is not going to get you anywhere. Confidently be yourself and ask questions. Don’t burst out into asking about your pay and benefits in the first go. Ask questions for information related to the job description, the company and more knowledge that the interviewer can share with you.
